The 1930
  • The Packard Boattail Speedster

One of the The Classic Museum Pieces Series from Monogram

This is a Parkard Boattail Speedster, 1930, 1/24th scale Monogram kit. This is one of a series of classic auto kits produced in the 1970s. Although not terribly popular at the time, these kits are remarkably high quality and very detailed. They're long gone from store shelves, but can still be found from dealers, and on eBay and such.

The engine is pretty much done. Working under magnification, it's never quite right though.

A bit of wet-dry sending takes care of various molding artifacts. Also, I see the underside has some crude molding of wood grain. I am very tempted to cut that out and replace it with actual wood. This was supposed to be a quick project though...

The body parts have been primed and sanded, and there's a start on the interior details... This is the first time I have ever tried to get a really good paint finish on plastic. We'll see how it goes.
Moving right along with the interior...

I painted the firewall black, but then realized that the way it is designed, it's outer edge stands outside the body section. That outside edge of the firewall needs to be body-color.

I'll have to try masking off all but the edge and painting it. It'll never match...

I'm pretty disappointed in my paint job, but I do see how to do much better in the future. Just for starters, the metallic paint in a huge mistake. Anyway, the rear end details are completed.
